Obituary

Maxine Evangeline Thomas, 78, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 3, 2026. She was born November 9, 1947, in Green Bay to the late Robert and Marjorie (Metoxen) Webster. Maxine was Bear Clan and a citizen of the Oneida Nation. She graduated from Luxemburg – Casco High School in 1965. In the summer of 1969, she married John “Jack” Edward Thomas Jr.

Maxine started working with the Oneida Language Program in 1977. It began her lifelong journey of learning and sharing the Oneida language and culture. She was a beloved Oneida Language and Culture Teacher with the Oneida school system.

She is survived by her children; Dawn (Christopher) Walschinski, Cynthia Thomas, and Jeffrey Thomas. Grandsons; Pedro Thomas, Devonte Pointer, and Dante Thomas. Great Grandchildren; Noah, Ase, Blake, PJ, Daleizha, Jevon, Jayveon, Lilly, Luna, and Lola. Maxine is further survived by her siblings, Susan W. Lemens, Geneva Stich, Linda Webster, Hugh Webster, Janice (Phillip) Hanley, Lance (Susan) Broberg, Bonnie Broberg (Terry) Van Hout, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert Webster and Marjorie Webster Broberg. Her grandparents; Isaac and Cynthia Metoxin Webster, and William and Evangeline Wheelock Metoxen.

Friends and family are welcomed to the Oneida Longhouse W370 Reformatory Road, beginning at 6:00 PM Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The Oneida Hymn Singer will sing at 9:30 AM on Wednesday followed by a service at 10:00AM. Burial will follow at the Oneida Sacred Burial Grounds.
