IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael Dale
Butterfield
February 9, 1943 – October 28, 2023
Michael Dale Butterfield, 80, succumbed to a lengthy battle with cancer at his home in De Pere, WI on Saturday October 28th. He was surrounded by many family members as he passed peacefully into the next world.
Michael went by several nicknames; Mike, Mick, Butter, Grandpa and Papa, but was most commonly called Mickey.
Mickey was born in Green Bay, WI on February 9th, 1943 to the late Dale and Evelyn (Widi) Butterfield. He graduated from Green Bay West High School and worked at the Green Bay Press Gazette for 25 years in various Circulation roles including USAToday, finishing his career as a Single Copy Manager. After formal retirement, he worked part time for Mader News Agency and Zenith Express doing sales calls and deliveries up until 2022 when his cancer diagnosis was made.
Mickey loved traveling, camping, deer and waterfowl hunting, and more recently, developed an affinity for golf. He also liked boating and working on boats; buying, fixing up and selling several throughout his life.
A significant part of Mickey's legacy was the various softball and hockey teams he coached throughout the years. He was especially honored to take one of his hockey teams overseas to play in a tournament in Iceland. The time and knowledge he dedicated to coaching allowed him to get to know thousands of people and he had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of athletes, and he was very proud of this.
Mickey was also very handy and loved to help others with projects, never hesitating to take on tasks ranging from painting and tile work to building bocce ball courts at his condo complex in Florida for everyone to use.
He and his wife Mary enjoyed being snowbirds, escaping to their condo in Florida to avoid the increasingly trying Wisconsin winters.
Mickey is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Mary; his children Barbara (Butterfield) Hendricks, Bruce (Karen) Butterfield, Eric (Holly) Heinkel, Mari (David) Hans, six grandchildren, Erik (Kristina) Butterfield; Vincent and Delaney Butterfield; Brian (Marni) Hendricks, Lauren and Evan Heinkel; Emma and Sadie Hans, nine great grandchildren, Abigail, McKenna, Madeline, Mia, Molly, Brian, Benjamin, Brooks, and Boaz.
He is also survived by his brother Ron (Sue) Butterfield who was by his side nearly every day until the end, distracting Mickey with conversation and encouraging him to fight this terrible disease.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Evelyn; his in-laws, Robert and Jacqueline Anderson, sister-in-law Barb Pasche, brothers-in-laws Karl Pasche and Mark Jacobs, and several aunts and uncles.
Mickey's family would like to thank all the friends who called, texted, and stopped by to visit; the staff at Green Bay Oncology and Unity Hospice for their outstanding and care and compassion, and a special thanks to his daughter-in-law, Holly Heinkel, for attending his Dr. visits and navigating him through the entire treatment process.
