Obituary

Miriam C. Stehsel, 93, De Pere, passed away on December 31, 2014. She was born March 29, 1921 in New Franken, to the late Killian and Myrtle (Leanna) Schauer. She grew up fast and left her family farm in Darien, WI, at the age of 13 to work as a nanny in Janesville so she could attend high school. After graduating from Janesville High School, she moved to Green Bay where she worked at TJ Grant Company. Here, she met Joseph G. Stehsel, who became her husband of 49 years. Joe told her later that when he saw they had the same birth date, he had told some co-workers he was going to marry her. The two married at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Bay Settlement on Sept. 6, 1941. During WWII, she worked at a bomb factory while Joe was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. After the war was over, they settled in Green Bay where they started a family. Miriam stayed home with her 5 children, always putting them first. She would make sure that her children had nice clothing, music lessons, and whatever else they needed though denying herself, as money was tight. She loved stylish clothing, as she didn't have any as a child so when she eventually could afford to dress well, she frequented Cold Water Creek; family would often lovingly tease her that she was like Imelda Marcos for all the many stylish shoes and clothing she had. Miriam loved doting on her grandchildren, cross stitching, shopping and reading she could always be found with a new book in hand, she loved reading the Press Gazette. She was sweet, a devoted Catholic always saying her Rosary nightly, and reading her prayer books; she attended Mass regularly until her health would not allow her. A special thank you to Dee Campbell of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in De Pere for her friendship and visiting regularly to bring communion. Miriam is survived by her four children, three sons and two daughers-in-law. Alan (Sharon) and Ben, Wheeler, TX; Arlen, Green Bay; Aaron (Sylvia) Stehsel, Flower Mound, TX; one daughter, Amy Jo (Dennis) Russell, De Pere and her son-in-law, Bob Strachan, Kiel. She is further survived by her 13 grandchildren, Michael (Gladys), Patrick (Tracy), Robert (Winnie) and Joseph Strachan; Shayna (Steven) Horne, Derrick Hammond and Christa (Dale) Elliott; Brian (Amy) and Joseph (Erica) Stehsel; Colleen (Josh) Toltzman, Garrett Russell, Jacob and Audrey Stehsel; 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandson; her brother, Leland (Bea) Shauer and sister, Colleen Terlicker.
