On July 7, 2012, Myrtle Elaine (Simmons) Ellerbee Watson joined her savior in Green Bay, WI after a long and wonderful life in which she blessed many with her love and friendship.
Myrtle was born in Panama on May 19, 1916 to the late Leeford and Edith (Earl) Simmons while her father worked on the Panama Canal. Her parents were from the Caribbean country, Barbados, and the family returned to the island after moving to Detroit and then New York City. As a young girl, Myrtle's family relocated to New York, but Barbados was always a huge part of their lives. Myrtle grew up in a loving household as the oldest of six siblings. Two sisters: Elsie and Lucille. Four brothers: Harold, Leon, Carlisle, and Sonny.
After completing her education, Myrtle entered the working world as an accounts receivable clerk for Gertz department store in Jamaica, New York until her retirement in 1972. She fell in love and in 1943, married Sherman William Ellerbee from North Carolina. They created one son, William Sherman Ellerbee. Sherman passed away in 1963. Myrtle remarried in 1973 to James Watson, enjoying the time they had together until Jim passed away in 1986.
Myrtle had many dear friends and family members who enriched her life, as she did theirs. An accomplished pianist, Myrtle performed a recital at Carnegie Hall. Teaching piano was a passion of hers and Myrtle was very proud that two of her many students also earned Carnegie Hall recitals.
Myrtle was a devoted member of Bethel Gospel Tabernacle Church in Jamaica, New York, where she taught bible school well into her eighties.
Her son, Billy, remembers this about his mother: "When I think of my mother, three words come to mind: 'Simply the Best' I was truly blessed. My mother had style and class. Others and I will her nurturing love, her caring ways, and her sincere kindness. She had wit and charm, and could make you laugh until you cried. New she is laughing up in Heaven with God and the angels. She is at peace."
Myrtle is survived by her loving son, William "Billy" (Carol) Ellerbee, Green Bay, WI; the love of her life, granddaughter Simone (Pete) Ryan-Lang, Houston, TX; her great-grandson Ryland Lang, and her brother Leon (Flo) Simmons, Tamarac, FL. Her memory will be cherished by these family members as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
