Obituary

Norbert "Nubs" Van Beckum, 92, of De Pere passed away quietly on Saturday morning, April 18, 2009. The son of the late Ferdinand and Frances (Van Veghel) Van Beckum was born August 26, 1916 in Green Bay. Norbert served his country in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1946, achieving the rank of Captain prior to discharge. On May 20, 1950, he married the former Mary Vandeveld at St. John the Evangelist in Green Bay. He was a graduate of East High School, and worked his early years for the Milwaukee Road Railroad. Norb had worked for many years as a buyer for H.C. Prange Company prior to retirement in 1975. He and Mary then founded Lamp Shades, Unlimited in Historic Downtown De Pere. They ran the business for many years until turning it over to their children, Robert and Kathleen, in 1993. He was an active member and past commander of the Sullivan-Wallen American Legion Post #11. Nubs enjoyed woodworking, gardening, cribbage, traveling, and was an avid Packer Fan. In earlier years, they were active at St. Willebrord Parish. Survivors include his wife, Mary, one daughter Kathy (Ted) Kordes, De Pere, 2 sons, Daniel Van Beckum, De Pere, and Jim (Cindy) Van Beckum, Appleton, grandchildren, Eric, Jonathan, Zachary, Paul, Christopher, and Bridget, as well as two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Edward (Mary) Van Beckum, Arlington, TX and Mrs. Joseph (Lorraine) Van Beckum, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Bob, and three brothers Edward, Joseph and Kenneth. Friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, April 26, 2009. Parish prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm. Visitation will continue after 10 am Monday at St. Mary Catholic Community on Pope John XXIII circle off Sportsman Drive, Town of Ledgeview. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Monday at the church with Father John H. Harper, officiating. Sullivan-Wallen American Legion Post Honors will be performed after Mass.
