Obituary

Paul H. DeTennis, 75, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was born March 1, 1934 in Green Bay to the late Paul and Frances (Roffers) DeTennis. On April 22, 1967 he married the former Betty Bressers at St. Mary's Church, De Pere. Paul attended Central Catholic High School and graduated in 1952. He then enrolled at St. Norbert College. After two years at St. Norbert, he and several friends enlisted in the US Army on March 18, 1954. The majority of his tour of duty was spent in Europe. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to St. Norbert College and was elected President of the Vets Club. He graduated in 1959 and went to work for Commercial Credit Corporation in their Green Bay and Milwaukee offices. Following a long family tradition, he entered the tavern and restaurant business in 1965. Paul, along with his wife Betty, owned and operated Paul's Bar on South Broadway in De Pere and later Paul's Rathskeller for many years. Upon retirement, he worked part time as a salesman for John Kos Home Improvement. Paul was a member of the 1952 championship football team that was elected to the St. Norbert Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He was a life long avid golfer and was a co-owner of Frontier Golf Course, now Twin Oaks, from 1972 to 1992. Paul was a Green Bay Packer season ticket holder for over 50 years, attending games in Green Bay and Milwaukee; he missed only one game in all those years. Paul, along with his brother Darold, were noted football historians for both college and professional football. Through the generosity of his children, Paul was able to fulfill a lifelong dream and return to Germany in 2003. He visited his son Alex, stationed with the US Army in Babenhausen, and other familiar places from his time in service. Paul's entire life was devoted to his children and grandchildren. He would not miss any sporting event, recital, or event deemed important to his children or grandchildren. Paul is survived by his children: Alex DeTennis, Trina DeTennis, and Paulie (Kim) DeTennis; three grandchildren: Chloe Hamstra, and Ava and Crosby DeTennis. He is further survived by his former wife Betty; siblings Darold DeTennis and Kaye (Gary) Jadin; brothers-in-law Ken Vissers and John Kautzer; nieces and nephews; life long friend Al Sabel and friend/ cousin Lee Roffers; and his many other friends.
