Randall Smits, 88, of Townsend, former De Pere resident, passed away Sunday morning at an Antigo hospital, after suffering a heart attack. The son of the late Joseph and Laura "Lollie" (Terrien) Smits was born December 9, 1922 in De Pere. On February 14, 1922, he married the former June Adams at St. Joseph Catholic Church, De Pere.
Randall was very active in his community. He was a Boy Scout Troop Leader in Vulcan, MI. He loved the outdoors and loved to fish and hunt with his sons and grandchildren. Randall was happiest when he was "making wood", and his favorite tools were the chainsaw, measuring stick and level. He also had a deep appreciation for music and played French horn his entire life. He was instructor at the Green Bay Correctional Institute and led the Church Choir for many years. Mr. Smits played in the Allouez Town Band with his daughter and the DePere City Band with his grandsons. Randall had a great sense of humor and was proud of everything he did.
Mr. Smits began in the linotype business with his father, Joseph Smits. He took over the business in the 1960's and ran it until 1986, when he turned the business, Smits Typographics, over to his two sons, Tim and Joel. Randall loved working with his sons and daughters. He was handy with machinery and could fix any kind of linotype machine. After retirement, he and his wife, June, moved to their cottage in Townsend. He assisted his neighbor (adopted son) Wayne Dobratz in his surveying business. In addition to everything else, Randall ushered for many years at Packer Games, ran the stuffing crew at the Green Bay Press Gazette, worked at Cleerman Printing and helped out his brother, Ken at the gas station. Above all else, he was a devoted family man, loved his wife, June and spending time with his children, and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, June, and their children and spouses, Susan and George Foehse of Roseville, MN, their seven kids, Randy and Lynn Smits, Green Bay, their four kids, Barb and Ken Treml, Green Bay, their two kids, Michael and Jan Smits, Newark, OH, their three kids, Tim and Kathy Smits, DePere, their two kids, Beth and Joe Sanders,DePere, four kids, Joel and Lori Smits, DePere, two kids, Rev. Sally and Brad Terrell, Green Bay, seven kids, Mary Jo Romenesko, Green Bay, four kids, Theresa and Mark Paral, Michicot, 2 kids, Pam and Scott Mathewson, De Pere, three kids, Holly Ann "Bear" Smits, Townsend, one sister, Sister Eileen of Tulca, Chile, one brother, Elwood and Laurel Smits, Riverside, CA, one brother-in-law, Earl Carter, and 57 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, two children Peter Brian and Eileen May, one son-in-law, Jerry "Romy" Romenesko, 2 grandchildren, Timothy Sanders and Peter Paremski, one great granddaughter, Ally Romenesko, his siblings, Kenny and Harriet Smits, Jerome and Enola Smits, Rita Carter, and Ruth Smits.
Family and friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday August 16, 2011 (TODAY). Visitation will continue after 9:00 am Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family, Lourdes Avenue at Suburban Drive until time of service. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 am Wednesday at the church with Father Tim Shillcox, O. Praem, officiating. Burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
