Obituary

Rev. Le Roy T. Remmers, age 73 of Green Bay, Wisconsin left his earthly life on July 6 unexpectedly. He was born on April 9, 1936 in Cortland, Nebraska to William and Teda (Wallman) Remmers. He graduated from High School in Filley, Nebraska, and obtained his B. A. degree from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Divinity Degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa in 1961 and was ordained into the ministry of the American Lutheran Church on June 18, 1961 in Pickrell, Nebraska. He married Janet E. Walters in Jamestown, North Dakota on December 28, 1958 who faithfully shared in his 48 years of ministry throughout the state of Wisconsin. Rev. Remmers served parishes in Bateman and Cadott, Wi. from 1961-1967; St. John Lutheran Church, De Pere, Wi. from 1967-1975; Chaplain and Development Coordinator at Woodside Lutheran Home, Green Bay, Wi. from 1975 - 1981; Senior Pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church, Green Bay, Wi. from 1981-1985; and Assistant to the Bishop in the former American Lutheran Church, Northern Wisconsin District for 3 years; and its successor in the East Central Synod of Wisconsin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America until 1994. He then returned to St. John Lutheran Church of De Pere where he served as Pastor until his retirement in September 2000. Following his retirement he served as a part time Chaplain at Good Shepherd Services, Ltd. of Seymour, Wisconsin from 2006 2009. Lee was passionate about living his faith and actively participated and held leadership roles in numerous community organizations. He served as the first Secretary/Treasurer of the original Housing Authority in the city of De Pere, was a recipient of the Roses for the Living Award from the De Pere Rotary Club, and the People Helper Award from the Brown County Commission on Human Rights. He is a past president of the Brown County Mental Health Association and the Irwin Dickinson PTA. While at Woodside he was responsible for developing the Woodside Oaks Retirement Complex for older adults. He served two terms as Secretary on the Executive Committee for the former Northern Wisconsin District of the American Lutheran Church. Those who knew him will forever remember Lee as a faithful steward of the church, a loyal and loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. Full of life, he had a joyful sense of humor and loved to cook and entertain for his family and friends. Lee's passions for travel lead Jan and him to the big Island of Hawaii where they celebrated the beauty of God's creation made lasting memories with friends and where he served 6 years as Vice President of the Bay Club Vacation Owners Association. Lee is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan; his son Mark and Jane Remmers, grandchildren Jill, Katie, Jon and Michael of Fort Collins, Colorado; daughter Elizabeth (Remmers) and Jon Jensen, grandson Jose of Racine, Wisconsin, granddaughter Allison Remmers of Clintonville, Wisconsin and step-grand daughter Sarah (Jensen) and Erik Gotlund of Green Oaks, Illinois; brother Earnest; and sister Carol Tuel both of Lincoln, Nebraska. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Elmer and son Paul. Visitation at Ryan Funeral Home 305 N. Tenth Street De Pere on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. On Friday, the family will greet friends and guests at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2911 Libal Street, Green Bay from 9:30-10:45 and a Worship Celebration of his life will follow at the church at 11:00 am. Burial will take place at Big Drywood Lutheran Church Cemetery in Cadott, Wisconsin on Saturday at 10:00 am. Please go to www.ryanfh.com to express online condolences to the family.
