Obituary

Richard "Rick" Johnson, 72, died peacefully at his home on November 1, 2017, when he was welcomed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His devoted family and friends and steadfast faith in God tenderly supported him during his courageous battle to live. Rick was born May 7, 1945 in Appleton, Wisconsin to Raymond and Mildred (nee Girard) Johnson. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1963, then went on to obtain his Bachelor and Master's Degree in Music Education from the UW-Oshkosh. He enlisted and served, in the states and abroad, in the United States Army band from 1966-1969. Rick met the love of his life, Sally (Sarah Sawtell), and married her on June 6, 1970 in Oshkosh, WI. They were blessed with two sons, Richard Charles Johnson Jr and William John Johnson. They lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Rick was a life-long educator, forging a distinguished career in elementary and middle school instrumental music where he inspired many. He was a volunteer with his wife, Sally for CASA of Brown County (Court Appointed Special Advocates for abused and neglected children). He spent several seasons, singing with the Dudley Birder Chorale and with his church choir- Union Congregational United Church of Christ. Rick's wife, Sally, was his greatest treasure, as were his boys, their wives, and his precious grandchildren. He was known for the laughter he created in every room he entered. He enjoyed golf, sports, the Packers, comedians, politics, and just being home with his family. Rick is survived by his wife Sally of 47 years; sons Richard Charles (Nicole) Johnson Jr and William John (Jenee) Johnson; five grandchildren: Camden, Elliana, Keira, and Maryn Johnson, and Andraia Bieth. He is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law: Janet (Michael) Franz and Kristine (Michael) Zeidler; sister-in-law Mary Johnson; brother-in-law John Sawtell; and 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Mildred Johnson; brother Girard Johnson, and sister Judith (John) Talley, as well as a granddaughter Allegra Bieth. The life of Richard Johnson will be celebrated on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Union Congregational United Church of Christ, 716 S. Madison St, with Pastor Bridget Flad Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Garden and Full Military Funeral Honors. Following the service, family may be greeted at a reception at the church. Please visit www.ryanfh.com to send condolences to Rick's family. Rick will be sorely missed by all who loved his tender heart and his ability to make people smile. Special thanks to Unity Hospice and Home Instead.
