Robert P. “Digger” DeGroot, 89, De Pere, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, March 28, 2026.
He was born on September 24, 1936, in Appleton to the late Edwin and Evelyn (Edelbeck) DeGroot.
Bob grew up in Chilton. After High School, Bob joined the Army/Air Force Reserve and served from 1954 – 1958. In 1958 he transitioned to the Army and served until 1960.
He graduated from Oshkosh State College with a degree in teaching in 1962. He also received his master’s from Northern Michigan.
On August 1, 1964, he was united in marriage to Karen Allen.
Bob’s first teaching position was at West De Pere High School, where he would stay for 32 years proudly teaching Geometry, retiring in 1994.
He served his community as the 4th ward alderman from 1972 – 1974. In 1974 Bob was elected mayor, serving from 1974 – 1978. He was reelected mayor in 1986 and served until 1988.
An outdoorsman by heart, Bob enjoyed deer hunting, small game hunting, and especially fishing. Never one to sit still, Bob was active in retirement volunteering his time. He drove for the Red Cross and Curative Connection. The Hemophilia Society had a special place in his heart, and Bob volunteered many hours each summer, driving the kids to camp. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention “Bob’s family” at Nicolet Restaurant, where Bob was a frequent fixture.
He is survived by his wife Karen of 61 years, his daughters, Jeanne (Arthur Ciesielczyk) DeGroot, Jennifer (Jesse) McKeever, Tricia (Alex) Baker, his granddaughter Emily and Great granddaughter Hailey, Bob is further survived by his sisters Arlene Loehrke, Jane (Peter) Kosolcharoen, as well as Karen’s family, and nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in law: Jed McKee, Jim Loehrke, and his nephew Michael McKee.
A celebration of Bob’s life will take place on Wednesday April 8, 2026, from 3:00PM – 7:00PM at Cedar Creek Event Center of De Pere, 1018 Cedar Street, De Pere. Ryan Funeral Home, De Pere, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial in Bob’s name to De Pere Historical Society, American Red Cross, Curative Connection, or a charity of your choice.
Special thanks to De Pere Fire & Rescue, De Pere Police, Kathryn, Erin and staff at Milo C. Huempfner Veterans Affairs Clinic for all your care and concern, especially recently.
