Robert L. Hoffmann, "Hoff", age 93, passed away on October 29, 2016. He was born January 17, 1923, in Sheboygan, the son of William F. and Kathryn (nee Ries) Hoffmann, and moved to Green Bay in 1937. A graduate of West High School, Robert attended St. Norbert College prior to enlisting in the Army and was called to active duty in June 1943. He served in the European Theatre with the 90th Infantry Division as a rifleman. In November of 1944, he was taken prisoner of war and held captive until May 1945. Robert was later made a Knight of the French Legion of Honour for services rendered to France during World War II. After liberation and subsequent discharge from the Army, he returned to school, receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marquette University. Robert married Grace Mary Everson in 1950, who preceded him in death in 1988. He married Margaret Campbell in 1990.
Robert spent his entire career in the area, teaching at Central Catholic High School, Premontre High School, and eventually retiring from St. Norbert College in 1987. After retirement, he served for a time on the St. Vincent Hospital Ethics Committee and the Publishing Committee of Voyageur magazine, volunteered at Paul's Pantry, and worked many Saturday mornings at the Green Bay Farmers' Market. Robert also enjoyed reading historical works, traveling, and playing tennis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Grace Mary; and sister, Marcella Gmach. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; four daughters: Gretchen Hoffmann (Joseph Doherty), Chicago, IL; Kristin (Kent) Powley, Neenah; Ingrid (Michael) Merkatoris, Green Bay; and Karin (Paul) Hoffmann-Hoagland, Dillon, CO; six grandchildren: Ryan Powley, Leah Powley; Tyler (Robyn) Merkatoris, Brett (Amber) Merkatoris, Alysson Merkatoris; Kirstin Hoagland; and five great-grandchildren. He is further survived by Margaret's children: Sam Campbell, Seattle, WA; Laura (Dan) Callan, Madison; Kathy Petray, Lake Forest, IL; five grandchildren: Jack and Margaret Callan; Carter, Owen and Bennett Petray; in-laws: Edith (Tweetie) Everson, John (Jack) Manley and Betty Nelson.
Friends may call at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016. A celebration of Hoff's life is Friday, November 11, at Old St. Joseph Church on the St. Norbert College campus, De Pere, WI, at 10:30 a.m., officiated by Rev. James Neilson, O.Praem. Burial at Allouez Catholic Cemetery.
