Obituary

Robert A. (Bob) Shade, Sr., 82, De Pere, Wisconsin and Marco Island, Florida, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in Green Bay in his sleep while fighting pneumonia. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on December 6, 1929 to Theodore (T.K.) and Dorothy (Deputy) Shade. Bob's family moved a number of times in his youth with the family settling in Denver, Colorado in 1948. He attended Colorado University in Boulder and graduated from the School of Business with a major in Accounting in 1952. Bob worked for IBM Corporation for 10 years after college. As a sales person he sold the first computers in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He advanced quickly in the fast growing company and came to Green Bay as the youngest branch manager in IBM history, a record that still stands. After coming to Green Bay he turned down several promotions and finally left IBM in order to stay in Green Bay, a place he had grown to love, to raise his family. While working for Paper Converting Machine Corporation, his entrepreneurial instincts focused on the growing computer industry and the need for printing paper for all the new computers. He created Shade Business Forms which was first located on Pine Street in 1966. The company sold its first single case order to Schreiber Foods. The early years were difficult, but by the 1970's the company was growing very fast. The company changed the name to Shade Information Systems and grew to become one of the largest stock forms companies in the country. Shade Information Systems became an employer of choice both regionally and nationally. Its culture was shaped by Bob's philosophy of creating and inspiring vision and finding talented people who celebrated the human spirit. The Shade company culture is very much alive today and lives in countless organizations throughout the country as a result of 23 years of Bob's leading and mentoring excellent people. Past employees still commune today bound together by Bob's passion. Shade Information Systems was sold in 1989. In 1983 Bob married Leslie (Gill) Hunt in a ceremony in Oakland, California. The couple made their home in De Pere, WI. After Bob's retirement they traveled and wintered in Marco Island, Florida. Bob was an avid and competitive sailor. He was a lifelong conservationist and was both committed to and honored by several organizations working to save resources and the environment in Wisconsin. He led a pioneer effort creating the first office recycling program in the country. He loved to travel and was one of the first to visit China after it was opened to tourists. He was a versatile artist who painted and sculptured in a variety of mediums. He had a 40 year retrospective in a local art exhibit in December of 2011. Bob shared his time with a wide group of friends, community, business and charitable organizations. He served the longest term of 22 years on the Board of Associated Bank, Green Bay. Bob served on the Board of Directors of Marinette Marine and Imperial Incorporated for many years. He served on several business boards and councils and helped to found the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Wisconsin Chapter of Nature Conservancy. Bob is survived by his wife of 28 years, Leslie, Marco Island, Florida and De Pere, WI, by his sons Michael W., De Pere, Robert A. Jr. (Margaret), Green Bay, his grandchildren, William Shade, Green Bay, Nicholas, Thomas, Matthew and James Shade, Green Bay. In addition he is further survived by a stepson, Gregg R. (Kathryn) Hunt, Dade City, Florida, two step-grandchildren, Kristina Hunt and Leah Michaletz and one step-great-grandson, Jason Michaletz. Bob is also survived by Marianne (Swanson) Morris, the mother of his children, of Egg Harbor and Sarasota, Florida, as well as one brother, William (Julie) Shade, of Greeley, Colorado.
