Roland "RJ" Couture, Jr., age 28, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on Monday, June 6, 2022, in Alexandria, VA. He was born on August 3, 1993, to Bridgit Martin and Roland "Rolo" Couture in Milwaukee.
RJ was a 2012 graduate of West De Pere High School, then majored in Political Science at St. Norbert College, graduating in 2016. Following college, he started his public service career in Washington D.C. He held several positions in the U.S. House of Representatives covering myriad areas of policy work.
He also worked at the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education at the U.S. Department of Education, as well as served as a Special Assistant in the Office of the Secretary at U.S. Department of the Interior. His private advocacy work included time as a Legislative Associate at Spirit Rock Consulting focusing on improving the lives of American Indians and tribal nations. Most recently he was a Program Analyst at the U.S. Department of Defense.
While he enjoyed his life on the east coast, he cherished spending time with his family and friends, especially family beach vacations and holiday gatherings. He had a small circle of friends from De Pere and St. Norbert College that he enjoyed any opportunity to gather with when home. RJ loved to cheer on his favorite teams, the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks.
He is survived by his parents, Bridgit Martin and Roland "Rolo" (Cindy) Couture; siblings, William "Will" Couture, Wade Waukau and Katie Waukau; grandparents, James "Jim" Martin, Roland and Susan Couture; aunts and uncles, Aurene (Steve Clark) Martin, Kenneth Martin, James "Sonny" (Tanya) Martin, Sarah Martin, Jamie Martin, Shannon Couture, Ashley Couture; special aunt and uncle, Hope Johnson and Darrell Ashmun; cousins, David, Joshua, Alex, Jaycob, Saunders, Syanne, Sena, Sophie, Owen and Madison; numerous other family and friends.
RJ is proceeded in death by his beloved grandmother, Georgianna "NoNo" Martin; grandmother, Helen Couture; uncle, Christopher Couture; many other extended family members.
A Memorial Gathering celebrating RJ's life will be held from 10 AM - 12 PM on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, WI 54115, with a time of sharing at approximately 11:30 AM. RJ will be cremated, with a private, family inurnment at a later date.
