Ruben Augusto Fernandez passed peacefully on February 26, 2021 at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, WI. Ruben was born on February 26, 1944 in Buenos Aires, Argentina as the only child of Augusto Fernandez (deceased) and Julie Escuredo (deceased).
At the age of 16, Ruben became a professional soccer player and left Argentina for Spain. He played goalie professionally for 10 years, ending his athletic career in Los Angeles, CA. There he continued his education at UCLA obtaining a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, Masters of Business Administration Degree, and worked toward PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology.
Ruben began work at American Medical International, in International Development, traveling the world performing feasibility studies for new hospital locations. He continued his healthcare career as a Hospital CEO working at American Medical International, National Medical Enterprises and Tenet where he over saw the construction, commissioning and management of hospitals globally utilizing his fluency in five languages.
Ruben retired early and helped his wife run a horse ranch in Acton, CA, where they rescued many animals. In September 2018, Ruben and Jane moved back to Wisconsin with their many animals to be close to family and settled on a farm in West De Pere. Ruben will always be remembered for his incredible culinary skills and his great love of soccer (futbol).
Ruben is survived by his wife Jane (Vande Castle) Fernandez, brother-in-law William J. Vande Castle, and wife Gail Vande Castle, nephew and godson William J. Vande Castle II and wife Ali Vande Castle with sons William J. Vande Castle III (Liam), Wesley Vande Castle and Miles Vande Castle, niece, Katharine Susan Vande Castle and nephew and godson Nicholas J. Vande Castle.
A Memorial Mass for Ruben will take place at Old St. Joseph Church on the St. Norbert College Campus at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2021. A burial at a later date will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
