Rubén Oscar Zayas, 70, De Pere, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2021 following a long battle with kidney failure and a short battle with Covid-19. He was born to Jesusa Rivera and Ramón Zayas on April 30, 1951 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Rubén met the love of his life, Doreen Skenandore, on July 4, 2000. They were united in marriage on February 21, 2009.
When Rubén arrived in the area, he worked at the Oneida Casino, The Radisson and for the Green Bay Packers. He loved working security for the Packers for the last sixteen years.
He enjoyed spending time with Doreen and his grandchildren, hunting, fishing and traveling. Rubén always had a huge smile and loved hugs by all.
Rubén is survived by his wife, Doreen; daughter, Teresa (Bryant Troville) Vansteel of Greenwood, SC; brother, José (Genevieve) Zayas; mother-in-law, Gwenevere Skenandore; siblings-in-law Joyce (Richard) Hoes, Wanda Skenandore, James (Kelly) Skenandore, Douglas (Sharon) Skenandore and Jeffrey (Nora) Skenandore, all of Oneida.
He is further survived by his grandchildren, Anthony (Kiarra Vigil) and Alexander Vansteel of Oneida, Aphrodite Vansteel and Aaliyah Cornelius of Greenwood, SC. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, friends and Green Bay Packers family.
Rubén was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Vansteel Jr. of Oneida; parents, Jesusa and Ramón; siblings, Francisco, Rosa, Hector, Magoli and infant brother Orlando, all from Puerto Rico; and father-in-law James Skenandore Sr. of Oneida.
Family and friends may visit at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, beginning at noon on Thursday, June 3, 2021. A prayer service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Douglas officiating. Burial will follow immediately after at the Oneida Sacred Burial Grounds.
