Obituary

Thomas Robert Myers, 64, passed away on March 3, 2014. Thomas was born in Chicago, IL on December 16, 1949. The loving son of Robert and Stella (Mikus) Myers, brother of Constance. Thomas attended Our Lady Gate of Heaven Elementary School, Mt. Carmel High School, DePaul University (B.A., M.A.), Purdue University (Ph.D). He taught university courses at Purdue University, University of Oklahoma, St. Norbert College, Lakeland College and Rasmussen College. He wrote scholarly articles and books. The author of Walking Point: American Narratives of Vietnam, Oxford University Press. He also wrote novels, stage plays and screenplays. He loved literature and screen, music and philosophy, history and politics. Thomas worked actively for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin and the Obama Campaigns. He traveled to Poland, Germany, France and Great Britain. Thomas was a romantic at heart. He loved the work of Melville, Thoreau, Dickinson, Whitman, Conrad, Hemingway and Fitzgerald. He loved the films of Ford, Kubrick, Spielberg, Scorsese, Truffaut, Godard, Hurls and Hitchcock. Thomas' greatest joys were to move an audience, to inspire his students, to care for his family and friends. He sought to be engaged, to give, to make a difference. He loved and lost, and he won a few, too. He tried. He believed. As Emerson said in "Nature" (1836), "Nothing divine dies." Graveside prayer service will be held at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Chicago. Memorials to UNICEF, The Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity or Paul's Pantry would be appreciated. Ryan Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
