Zeta K. Turriff, 98, De Pere, passed away surrounded by her children Thursday evening April 8, 2021. She was born in Rockland to her wonderful parents Ted and Ethel (O'Keefe) Wellens on October 2, 1922.
She graduated from East De Pere High School in 1940. Zeta continued her education by attending Green Bay Vocational School (NWTC). Zeta worked as a secretary at Baum's Dept. Store in 1940, then on to Prudential Insurance Co. where she worked the next 13 years. She also worked at Fort Howard Paper Co. and Aetna Life Ins. Co., where she retired from as office manager in 1985.
Zeta met the love of her life when her best friend Jane Turriff introduced her to her brother Donald. They became friends and wrote to each other when Donald left to serve in the army during WWII. They married in 1950 and started their life together. They were married for 60 wonderful years until Donald passed away in 2010.
Zeta always found a way to balance her family, work, and her many passions. When she became interested in something she put her whole heart into it whether it was education or serving her community. Zeta belonged to the Brown County Community Women's Club and was instrumental in starting the Martin Luther King celebrations in Brown County. She was a charter member of Learning and Retirement at UWGB. In 1998 Zeta reached out to the Neville Public Museum and together started the Neville Public Museum Dinner Programs. Zeta wanted to start the program series to give elders the opportunity to have dinner along with an educational program while raising money for the museum. In 2018 Zeta was honored to be a recipient of the Packers Give Back Award for her work with the museum. In 2001 Zeta helped create Spirituality in Retirement (SPIRIT) to bring people of different faiths and beliefs together.
